Group Facilitator - Rock to Recovery

“I have witnessed firsthand the healing power of music in a treatment setting, where clients who normally struggle to open up are able to do so through musical expression.”

Drew has a Bachelor’s degree in Music Industry from USC and a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from Pepperdine University. He built a name for himself in the indie rock scene with his previous bands, Wintergreen (Mt. Fuji Records) and Handshakes (Old Flame Records / Razor & Tie). After struggling with addiction for many of his touring years, he got sober in 2014, completed grad school, and began working in mental health treatment in Los Angeles. It was during that time he first teamed up with Rock to Recovery and experienced the healing power of music.

“I love the quote, “Music can heal the wounds that medicine cannot touch.” I find this to be especially true in recovery, where music has proven to be an incredibly effective and sustainable tool in helping to calm anxiety, regulate mood, and improve impulse control. The early days of recovery can be unbelievably treacherous for addicts and alcoholics. Music can help us better navigate that early period of rebuilding and recalibrating. I have witnessed firsthand the healing power of music in a treatment setting, where clients who normally struggle to open up are able to do so through musical expression. By “forming a band” in Rock to Recovery, clients are able to work together on social skills, enhance communication, and increase self-esteem in a sober and creative environment.”
